HUm Dono posterIn the music space replete with badtameez dil, ishq kameena, ishq nikkamma, munni badnaam hui, sheela ki jawani, one just can’t imagine Hindi cinema had a glorious era of lyrics that skipped the surface and touched the soul. And it is unthinkable in present day Bollywood that there was a time when giants of lyricism and poetry  inhabited the tinsel town.

This series brings alive those timeless, simple yet soulful classic songs once again with their value-enhancing, life-affirming interpretations.

Year 1961. Film- Hum Dono. Starring Dev Anand in a double role. The film had music by inimitable Jaidev and lyrics by unsurpassable poet-lyricist Sahir Ludihianvi.

Dev Anand in one of his avatars in the double role played an Army Major. The song situation showed him getting ready in his army dress and expressing his outlook towards life, his loss of love and other relations, through the mellifluous and soul-stirring voice of Mohammed Rafi.

Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya..

The song encapsulates the way of life as enumerated in various spiritual texts including Upanishads and  in the Bhagwad Gita (which itself is nothing but a Song Of God).

The songs mukhda(opening verse) talks of how to lead life. The way is to go along , to flow with Life instead of swimming against the current. Those were the times when the disclaimer :Smoking is injurious to health did not hang like sword of Democles. The cigarette smoke is beautifully expressed as  a metaphor for worries and anxieties that are not to be mulled over but to be blown away like smoke.

Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya

Har fikr ko dhuein mein udata chala gaya..

The human nature is to lament the losses and misfortunes and revel the achievements and successes. Sahir Ludhianvi suggests  not to waste energies on the disasters striking one’s life but become so large hearted as to celebrate them, because nothing in the world is useless. Everything is there to teach a lesson or transcend some pattern.

Barbadiyon ka soz manana fizool tha

Barbadiyon ka jashn manata chala gaya..

The law of Karma and destiny are very intrinsic to Hindu Spirituality. Another trait of human nature is to accept the pleasant and deny the painful. To seek what you are passionate about and dismiss what is disliked. In this couplet Sahir Ludhianvi expresses the way of life is to accept what one receives as destined and keep jettisoning that is lost. Though it is very difficult to forget one’s losses, the best attitude is to keep plugging  the process of forgetting what is gone. And take it as part of the fate ordained.

Jo mil gaya usi ko muqaddar samajh liya

Jo kho gaya main usko bhulata chala gaya..

This is the essence of what Lord Krsna teaches in Gita too. The principle of equanimity-where the dualities of sorrow-joy, pleasure-pain, gain-loss, praise-insult, heat-cold etc are taken in one’s stride without liking for one and aversion to the other.

Kabir , in one of his couplets  says that O Lord don’t give me the pleasures because the pain always follows it.He shuns both pleasure and pain. On the other hand Namdev in his bhakti  prays to God that whether its pleasure or pain both are acceptable to me, as both are your dispensations.

The whole purpose of life is to bring one self to that state of being where one maintains the equipoise. A person works relentlessly without attachment to the results. He does not shy away  from the designated duties and responsibilites but remains detached  from resultant joy or sorrow while fulfilling them.

Gham aur khushi mein fark na mehsoos ho jahaan

Main dil ko us makaam pe lata chala gaya..

Anyone developing an outlook like the one enumerated so succinctly by Sahir Ludhianvi in this evergreen song shall be a winner through the viccissitudes of life. For sure.
