Main Tera Hero Film Review :Tomfoolery Rules !

main-tera-hero-posterThere is a saying that even if you grow up it does not mean you are grown up. With Main Tera Hero David Dhawan is living in a time warp. In 2014 he still thinks that nineties are the in thing. It is Govinda and Salman Khan recycled in the garb of Varun Dhawan.

But what Govinda achieved with Hero No 1,Raja Babu,Coolie No 1, Partner, Dulhe Raja is evergreen. Now what was the need to repackage Govinda’s antics. David Dhawan seems audience is stuck and has not moved on. Unfortunately it has to a great extent.

A remake of a Telugu film Kandireega, it smacks of all that has been seen before. Seenu ( Varun Dhawan) is a brat and a super-confident about it. He shifts from Conoor/Ooty to  Bangalore to study in a college that has a banner of Class of 2014 permanently displayed above its entrance. Wonder why? Mainly the college campus setting is just a ploy to showcase Varun Dhawan’s histrionics. He meets Sunaina ( Ileana D’Cruz) and falls in love with her at first sight. But the hitch is that a dreaded Inspector Angad( Arunoday Singh) is also in love with her and won’t tolerate anybody messing with her. Varun Keeps romancing Ileana D’Cruz under the very nose of Inspector Angad.

Then Sunaina is kidnapped. And in comes Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) who also loves Varun Dhawan. She being the daughter of a notorious Don Vikram Sinhal ( Anupam Kher), cannot brook any opposition for her wants and desires. Don Vikram  who loves her daughter the most, announces that Varun will be his son-in-law.Now a quadrangle happens where Varun loves Ileana and wants to get her freed from Don’s confinement, Nargis loves Varun, Arunoday loves Ileana and so on and so forth.

Whether Varun is able to get Ileana or has to marry Nargis, forms the crux of the rest of this masala mix on high octane.

Ileana was better off having Ranbir Kapoor as her hero in Barfi. Nargis Fakhri was well placed having Ranbir Kapoor as her hero in Rockstar. But both of them vying for Varun Dhawan is like a bitter pill to swallow.

In one of the cameo’s reminding one of Sonu Sood’s character in Singh is King, Saurabh Shukla is a right hand man of Anupam Kher and he has this penchant for saying : Words pe mat jao, emotions pe jao (Don’t go by what is said, go by the emotions behind them). Emotions!. In a David Dhawan film!. Ha! Replicating one of Milap Milan Zaveri’s  dialogues : As the magician tricks us with his magic, as Greek play is generally very tragic, David Dhawan’s film are devoid of any logic.

In this mindless caper, with no-holds barred treatment, the supporting cast of Anupam Kher, Raju Kher, Rajpal Yadav, Shakti Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa, Saurabh Shukla have done their best to go overboard.

Nothing against Varun Dhawan though. With his Elvis Presley kinda hairstyle, he gives his all by stepping into the shoes of Govinda, Salman Khan and even Shahid Kapoor. But some of the antics that seemed so seasoned with Govinda or Amitabh Bachchan come across as too amateurish on his green shoulders. He has the energy, natural camera friendliness but when it comes to tickle a funny bone, give me the originals any day. Still the movie gets a brownie one star extra for Varun Dhawan’s energy and spunk.

Watching it does not entertain you. With crisp editing also, beyond a point, it stops engaging you. Its like being served bhel-sev-dahi-wada-puri.

David Dhawan may want to peddle his son  to the viewers’ as their Hero, I would go for Govinda, Kadar Khan jodi any day to get a high with such kind of  20 years old wine in not even a not so new bottle.
